After the Mustela nigripes population was practically wiped out by disease, it was determined that the remaining wild Mustela nigripes were at risk for the survival of the species. The last 12 were captured and combined with 6 already in captivity to bring the world total to 18, all in captivity, in 1987. The captive breeding program was successful and they are slowly gaining population. The blackfooted ferret is endangered and feeds on rodents, it is against the law for breeders to own them.
