After this breed's already small population was reduced by disease, it was decided that the remaining wild ferrets were not a large enough breeding population to survive. The last 12 were captured and combined with 6 already in captivity to bring the world total to 18 ferrets, all in captivity, in 1987. Captive breeding has been successful.

This small carnivore once was widely distributed throughout the North American Great Plains to the southwestern United States. It is now the rarest native mammal in the United States, due to the reduction of grasslands and eradication of the prairie dog and disease.
